Dental implants are without a doubt one of the best solutions to replace missing teeth. They are a long-lasting solution to a dental condition for millions of people around the world.

Fortunately, dental technology has progressed significantly in the past 20 years. Years ago, dentures and partials were basically the only solutions to this problem, but these days dental implants are a very common dental procedure that we offer at all of our locations.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are basically new, titanium roots for your tooth. Here are some situations where you should consider dental implants:

  • Replace a missing tooth or teeth or improve facial structure and symmetry
  • Provide additional support for dentures or a bridge that may be coming loose
  • Improve your jaw strength as you eat, speak, and chew your food with ease and comfort

The dental implants procedure can be quite extensive, and we encourage you to contact us and schedule your consultation so that you can go over the details with our experienced dentists.

If you suffer from dental anxiety, we can help with that too! Sedation dentistry can relieve your anxiety so that you can relax and get the dental care you deserve.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants offer a wide range of benefits for anyone who is concerned about the appearance of missing or broken teeth. Benefits include:

  • Improved smile
  • Increased self-confidence
  • Next best thing to healthy, natural teeth
  • Ability to eat your favorite foods

What Is the Procedure for Dental Implants?

Dental implants are inserted in a staged process. The first stage involves burying the implant flush with the bone but underneath the gum. The implant will replace the root of the tooth and is placed under the gum so as to help protect the implant area and allow it to heal.

In the second stage, the dentist will check on the progress of the implant and connect a post which goes through the gum and into the mouth itself. This is known as an abutment and can either be a custom molded piece or chosen from a variety of stock-manufactured versions. The gum will then heal around this area.

In the final stage, the implant of the prosthetic tooth or teeth is added. Dental implants have a high success rate and the proper procedure for your implant will be discussed with you during your consultation.

Preparing for Dental Implants

You may have several dental x-rays taken of your teeth and mouth before a dental implant is to be made and inserted. For the surgery itself, your dentist may consult with other experts, such as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon or a periodontist. Local anesthesia, sedation, or general anesthesia may be administered depending on the extent of the treatment. Your dentist will discuss a proper treatment plan with you and help you understand each stage of the procedure so that you can feel more confident about the process, and your new, more beautiful smile!

Recovery from Dental Implants

After each dental implant stage, you may experience some discomfort, including swelling of the gums and face, bruising of the skin, soreness at the site where the implant was done, or minor bleeding. If these become worse, you may need to take antibiotics or pain medications. You should eat soft foods while the surgical area heals. If the surgeon has administered stitches which do not dissolve, these will be removed in approximately 10 days. Otherwise, the stitches will dissolve naturally within 10 days to two weeks.
